Frequently Asked Questions

How will Todayist help me?

Great question! Todayist helps you make the most of each day. Think of us as your friendly, digital wellness coach. Whatever you want to prioritize – whether it’s eating well, connecting with friends, being more productive, etc. – we’ll help you fit it into your day. No matter what kind of day you’re having.

Basically, Todayist is a flexible, sustainable way to focus on yourself. You can easily track your goals, habits, tasks, and more in one intuitive, guilt-free tool.

How is Todayist different from the 50 other things I’ve tried?

We feel you. Unlike the tools that assume you’ve got full autonomy over your theoretical “free” time, Todayist is designed from the ground up for busy folks who juggle multiple roles. We prefer to talk about what we are, but to better explain how we’re different, here’s a little bit about what we’re not.

We’re not rigid.

Who wants to open an app again the day after they broke a streak? Not us. Todayist helps you find realistic and flexible ways to fit your goals into each day. So no more guilt / shame when you realize at 4pm that you’re not going to get around to that 45-minute workout.

We’re not hard to use.

Ever open an app or a planner to a blank page asking about your goals, then close it because you just don’t have the time / mental space? Listen, we LOVE about goal setting, but if we had time to create “SMART” goals about our personal life then we wouldn’t have built Todayist.

Every part of Todayist is designed to be supportive and simple. Just pick your goals from our curated menu, and we’ll give you fresh, tailored suggestions each day to keep you inspired.

We’re not narrow.

We got tired of needing separate tools for every part of our lives. So Todayist includes a lot – goals, habits, the day’s most important tasks. You can even add in things like mindfulness and mood tracking.

We figure you’ve got your grocery list and your work deliverables covered; our goal is to create a space for all of the other important (but non-urgent) things that keep getting put on the back burner, so you can feel good about how you’re spending your time.

How can I get the most out of Todayist?

The single best way to get the most out of Todayist is to set a daily alert to plan your day. Whether you’re a night before or a morning of type of planner, an alert is the best way to help future you take 2 minutes for yourself.

To add a reminder just go to the Settings Menu, tap on “Notifications”, then add a “Plan My Day” Reminder.

Tell me more about the free version vs. the paid version

We built Todayist to help busy people live with more purpose and be happier, and we want this tool to be available to anyone, regardless of ability to pay.

Because of our commitment to doing good, the free version of Todayist offers fantastic functionality – you can focus on any one goal, customize your daily planning ritual, track your mood, create your own activities, and more.

A Premium account gives you access to all of the fun free stuff AND helps you go deeper. Specifically, with Todayist Premium you can:

  • Prioritize multiple goals at once – this is where the app really starts adding value

  • Add each day’s most important tasks – whatever it is, other than your goals, that you’ll feel great about if you get it done (buying laundry detergent, doing that one work thing, returning a phone call… anything goes)

  • Go deep with habits and scheduling by gaining the ability to make activities recur on specific days of the week
How can I add habits?

In the early 1800s, a Prussian guy named Helmuth von Moltke said “No plan survives first contact with the enemy.” But this doesn’t mean we shouldn’t still make a plan. 🙂

Our approach to habits is based on the idea that life can be unexpected. We love habits – as long as they add positive value to our life. The minute they become another thing we use to feel bad about ourselves, they’re no longer productive. So we built a way to help you get the positive value from habits but cut out the negative stuff.

To get started, just go to an activity (whether it’s one we suggested or your own custom addition), tap the 3 dots to the right of the activity, and choose when you want the activity to repeat.

You can add daily habits, weekday habits, weekend habits… anything goes.

Here’s where it gets fun. Say you add a daily habit of doing 30 minutes of yoga. But you slept poorly last night, your kid is sick, and your day is jam-packed. No worries! You’ll see that habit appear while you’re planning your day, and you can change it to something that will actually work – maybe 10 minutes of chair yoga during one of your calls, or a mini stretch break between meetings.

Todayist gives you the flexibility to make your habits fit your day so you can make sustainable progress toward your goals.

How many goals should I have and how do I change them?

With the free version of Todayist you can focus on one goal. Premium users can focus on multiple goals at once – 3 goals is a great place to start.

You can change your goals at any time by going to the settings (gear icon) and tapping on “Update Goals”.

How can I get the most out of the “Just Breathe” screen?

A lot of folks ask why we don’t have a counter showing when to inhale/exhale. The simple reason? We believe that, however your breath is flowing, your natural breath is perfect. Follow it, feel it, notice it… exactly as it is. You’re the expert on your breath, not us.

You get to decide whether you have time for a single breath, 3 breaths, or 10 minutes of stillness when you begin your planning ritual. Any amount is ok. It’s even fine if you don’t have any time to pause and breathe! Do whatever works for you.

Some tips for getting started:

  • Plant your feet firmly on the ground and sit up straight, then relax

  • Close your eyes and let your hands rest in your lap – put down anything you’re holding

  • Give yourself permission to set aside whatever you were just thinking about for this short period of time

  • Follow the sensations as you breathe in and out – notice where you feel the breath, in your nose, throat, chest, back, sides, abdomen

  • Let yourself be present and still for the space of 3 breaths, or even longer if it fits your schedule

What tea should I try?

So glad you asked! Our favorite is Jasmine Silver Needle – the place we buy ours from says that it’s “stunningly fragrant, sweet, floral, and phenomenally silky”. We agree. 🙂

What should I read?

Mary Oliver. Every one of her poems is a gift. And, honestly – how long has it been since you’ve intentionally read a poem?
